Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, the first book in the fantasy series of the same name. Celaena Sardothien is 18, an assassin, and has spent the past year as a prisoner in the salt mines of Endovier. Crown Prince Dorian offers her a deal: she competes in a tournament to become the King’s Champion, the king’s personal assassin, and if she wins, she earns her freedom after several years of service. As the trials go on, the other competitors start turning up dead, and Celaena has to find out who is behind the killings. Alongside that, there’s her training with Captain of the Guard Chaol, her friendship with Princess Nehemia, and magic that has been banned in the kingdom. The first book is fairly light: a tournament, court intrigue, a murder mystery and some romance. The series gets darker and bigger in scope from there, with new characters and storylines, and grows from one assassin’s story into epic fantasy about a war for an entire continent. The series has seven novels: Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash. There’s also a prequel, The Assassin’s Blade, a collection of novellas about Celaena’s past. Tower of Dawn runs alongside Empire of Storms and follows a separate storyline. Currently reading book 5 (or 6) in the series and would love for other readers to get to know Sarah J. Maas and her work.
